you know you're a law student when... II

1- you are seriously worried that you've missed something in your legal analysis of the Tim Horton's cup case
2- you realize that you simply cannot read everything
3- you are ridiculously proud that your boyfriend knows all about the Ogopogo case (he does!)
4- you understand where the lawyers are assholes stories start
5- you start calculating what a 70 hour work week would look like

but i love this. that's the thing. for the first time in a long time i feel like i am exactly where i am supposed to be. sure, it's scary and somewhat soul crushing but i love it. i get the impression that some expect this to be the 'hapless adventures of a girl in law school' blog, and I can't do that. sure, i'm still hapless (I'm still ME) but i'm not wandering in the wilderness anymore...

you know you are a law student when...

1. you hear great celebrity gossip about a marriage (or divorce) and your first thought is: I'd like to see that prenup!
2. you are sad to realize you can't blame a fictious governmental agency for a kid burning his house down
3. everywhere you go you start looking for a plug for your laptop
4. you hear a loud noise outside and run out- excited to see some liability!
5. you start a debate what colour highlighter you'd come back as. with yourself. at 2:40 in the morning.

5 more weeks!

Oscar Fashion & Gossip Update

First up - Oscar fashion
This was the first time since- 1993? that I haven't watched at least a part of the Oscars.
I watch for the clothes. So, I've been checking out the gossip blogs for the past week.
if you'd like to see some awesome outfits and get great gossip, check out some of the following sites...
www.gofugyourself.typepad.com
http://celebritysmack.blogspot.com
http://celebritysailing.blogspot.com
there are so many blogs out there- those are some of my faves.
Now the outfits that were the best (ie worst) at the Oscars were...
Charlieze Theron! I know!
I kind of love the idea- strips of material, wrapped mummy style around. It's different. But - in forest green? with a bow on her shoulder? Why? Why?
Char, honey- you're gorgeous, perfect legs & lovely hair; you have money, people *give* you pretty clothes. Why the Mummy in the Forest look? Is it because you & Stuart broke up? Yes, he was very pretty. But this is the time to bring out the A clothes sweetie. pretty lip glosses (look at the lip gloss reviews in the post below! they'd look fab on you).

Ms. Sharon Stone is another one who just- I dunno. Say what you will about the Stone-inator- she's got ummm.... eggs! and she knows how to dress but this looks like ... like... Windsor Forks circa 1985. don't get me started about the Lohan. I want to like her (i really really do- mean girls rocked!) but she is circling the drain. Ms Stone has Basic Instinct 2 coming out soon. it's all so uck.
Stone is hot. I saw her in Broken Flowers and she's still got it.
Anyway, in case you can't tell from the photos - Stone is wearing *frosty blue eyeshadow*, and I'm pretty sure she's not being ironic. Her hair is a teased, sprayed and coiffed confection. A tribute to the 80s hairbands- maybe her next role is as an aging Poison groupie?

Madonna has been saying in interviews that her daughter, Lourdes is concerned that her mother is gay. Apparantly, she saw the MTV awards show & watched her mother kissing Britney Spears. Madonna's got some crazy story about passing on 'rock star energy'. um, ok? If I were Madonna, I'd actually be more worried about my daughter thinking I had syph or something but I guess that's just me.

Britney Spears may/ may not be pregnant. Isn't she over yet? Why do we care? If I have to look at god awful pics of Brit Brit everytime I try to get some good gossip for the rest of my life.

Paris Hilton is banned from Vanity Fair parties by Graydon Carter. That may be the best editorial decision made by Vanity Fair in years.

There are some awesome pics of a very drunk Jake Gyllen-whatever partying with the Brokeback people on Oscar Eve. He's obviously drunk and enjoying himself, really funny.

AND Jessica Simpson seems to have been dumped by Adam Levine. I've heard only that one song of Maroon 5 and yeah, not feeling it. Anyway, she will be dumped!

that's all for now...

Law School Nutters/ Lipstick Roundup 2006

I've been reading a bunch of other law school blogs and man! we're a crazed bunch. My friend RR said just the other day that he knows why nobody like lawyers. We're trained to be assholes in lawschool. They make us compete from day one- we're always tired and behind and they force us to tread over each other. Career Day was another example. Can't even... what were the best things I got from Career Fair? A great blue stress ball that Belle quite likes and... some Tim Horton gift certificates. I did talk to some awesome people and feel a bit better about the whole will-I-have-a-job-when-I'm-done thing. Dr. Don was awesome.

I feel out of the rut i was in for most of February. It IS the worst month...
to alleviate the boredom, I've started to wear more makeup. Now, I always wear a little. I'm a redhead so without mascara i look albino. But apparently I don't look like I'm wearing any (which makes me very upset- I want to be fabulous, dang it!)
Yesterday I wore my green Juxt MAC eyeshadow. I love it so much- got lots of compliments AND ended up being on TV. I love makeup. This weekend I'm off to buy new eyeshadows- thinking of hitting the Stila & MAC counters (more on that later).

As most of you know, I've been on a hunt for the perfect lipstick for as long as I can remember. I just counted 9 lipsticks- not counting the cheek-lip combinations and I recently bought a great new gloss for $3 and think it works- very glossy. I've had to start chucking stuff out (some is really old).
Here are my favorites:

Baby Doll – Nars- obviously this is pink: a beautiful deep bubble gum colour. this product is called a 'lip lacquer', very similar in texture and wear to MAC's lip glass. So it's a little sticky but you can wear it by itself or over another colour. If i buy this product again I would probably choose a darker colour.

Laura – NYC- this is called a liquid lipstick and is very much like the Stila lip polish (much cheaper naturally). This is a dark pink, more impact than a gloss but not a traditional lipstick. I love it- I always get complements on it.

VooDoo – Black Opal- this is a proper lip gloss, comes in a cute pot and all. It's a shiny orange with lots of gold overtones. Fabulous. I've had it forever and used it sparingly. It works over a simple lip liner, or another colour. I'll be finished it soon and will mourn its passing. I've started looking for a replacement; which leads me to my latest find...

554A – NYC – it doesn't have a proper name but I got it last night and I think I'm in love. It's a pinkish (surprise!) orange with gloss to spare. The product is called liquid lip shine. So far so good...

Black Honey – Clinique – I believe this is technically a lip stain, its dark colour belies the fact that it looks great on everyone, matches everything and manages to look professional without drag queen. This is the interview and job lipstick as well as the one you wear that your boyfriend doesn't quite realize is lipstick.

Cream Soda – Oil of Olay – fantastic lip liner that works with everything. I read in Glamour years ago that Kevin Aucoin swore by this- I bought it in bulk before they stopped making cosmetics.

a goodbye

My great aunt Stella died about a month ago. She'd been sick for a long time and everyone knew she would pass soon. And then she did. Her grandson Daniel, who she adored, was by her side.
The funeral was sad- a goodbye to someone we loved in complicated ways. A good woman, who was often afraid, strong and sometimes unforgiving, with a stubborness. I hope she was happy in her life, in her choices and, ultimately, in her death.
I've been thinking a lot about death over the past couple of months. It's always fascinated me as a topic- I'm always curious to here other's experiences with their loved ones dying. I watched the series finale of Six Feet Under - without giving anything away, we go into the future and see how all these people that we've grown to love (& hate) in real and complicated ways die. Someone told me, while I was mourning Auntie Stella, that with a death a whole world dies. With Auntie's death, i lost my last link to my grandparents' generation.
there is a speech near the end of Angels in America, where Harper sees the souls of the dead moving up into the heavens (a sort of rapture, if you will) and speaks of the painful process of life. I've had conversations about life with many people & one common theme is the grasping for meaning in our lives and in the lessons we learn from each other. this conversation always leads to a discussion of loss and why we suffer. this painful process of the loves, the sorrows, the joys, births and deaths are all a part of our life and our evolution. they may not mean anything but they point to the future and may lead to solace. at least i hope so.

Night flight to San Francisco - chase the moon across America.
I dreamed we were there. The plane leapt the tropopause, the safe air, and attained the outer rim, the ozone, which was ragged and torn, patches of it threadbare as old cheesecloth, and that was frightening. But I saw something that only I could see, because of my astonishing ability to see such things: Souls were rising, from the earth far below, souls of the dead, of people who had perished, from famine, from war, from the plague, and they floated up, like skydivers in reverse, limbs all akimbo, wheeling and spinning. And the souls of these departed joined hands, clasped ankles, and formed a web, a great net of souls, and the souls were three-atom oxygen molecules, of the stuff of ozone, and the outer rim absorbed them, and was repaired. Nothing's lost forever. In this world, there's a kind of painful progress. Longing for what we've left behind, and dreaming ahead. At least I think that's so. (Tony Kushner, Angels in America)

So- goodbye to my Auntie Stella and all the world that was hers.

Sadie's Southern Adventure (part one)

As many of you know, I went to Georgia and South Carolina over my January Reading Week.
I've yet to post pictures, etc for a variety of reasons, including:
1- I need to get them developed 2- I need to upload them 3-I need to find time to write a coherant narrative
However, my trip began & ended with my sweetie & I driving around the Atlanta perimeter and almost losing my mind (his patience was lost). Someone forwarded this film clip about- the perimeter highway around Atlanta. So, I thought this would be a good place to start.
I have a month of classes left. That means I have 5 assignments before 4 exams. Please bear with me. In the meantime- enjoy!
more to come
